What is the purpose of this blog?
- To explore heightism and to understand its causes.
- To examine heightism in the media and the wider world.
- To collate the experiences of short people’s encounters with heightism.
- To ultimately contribute to the elimination of height based prejudice.
What inspired you to create this blog?
I’d experienced heightism myself but never had a name for
it. I was aware that my height influenced the way many people saw me and that
in some cases it was a barrier. However it wasn’t until I met my husband and began sharing his life that I
realised just how significant heightism is. I began to understand the devastating impact heightism can have and how deeply it can wound a person as well as blight their life prospects.
Eventually we had a lovely baby boy. This drove me on to examine heightism in greater depth. The more I read, the more disturbed I became by the negativity, cruelty and distress I saw experienced by shorter people. I decided to become an activist and to challenge heightism for my son and for everyone. This blog is one of the ways I hope to do this.

What is heightism?
I’m exploring this and changing my own personal definition
all the time. The definition Wikipedia offers is this. “Heightism is prejudice
or discrimination based on height. In principle it can refer to treatment of
either unusually tall or short people.”
For more please visit my page ‘Heightism – The Facts’.
Why does this blog mainly focus on the heightism experienced
by shorter people?
Because that is my life experience and I can’t speak for
taller people. That doesn’t mean that I don’t consider tall heightism a problem
and in many ways it exists in tandem with heightism directed against shorter
people.
